CNN became the first American media organization to restrict Australians’ access to its Facebook pages, according to The Wall Street Journal. This decision comes a few weeks after the country’s high court ruled that media companies are responsible for comments left by other people on their Facebook posts. A CNN The spokesperson told the publication that Australian users will no longer be able to view its main Facebook page, CNN International page and pages dedicated to its shows.

However, the social network reportedly refused to disable all comments on CNN pages in Australia. Facebook rolled out a tool in March that allows celebrities, politicians and news outlets to restrict who is allowed to comment on their pages, but they should still set a restriction for each post. CNN decided that doing this for all of its properties would take time and opted to completely block Australia instead.
A CNN spokesperson said:
“We are disappointed that Facebook, once again, has failed to ensure that its platform is a place of credible journalism and productive dialogue around the news among its users.”
As for Facebook, he said The newspaper that he supports reform of Australia’s defamation laws. In addition, he said he provided CNN with features that he can use to manage comments and that he continues to “provide Australians with a destination for quality journalism, including through Facebook News which we launched in August”.
Earlier this year, Australia also passed a law that requires tech giants to pay media for the use of their content. In response, Facebook blocked Australian editors and residents to share topical content. It’s fast canceled the ban, however, and agreed to pay some news agencies for their content.
